Tips on getting started in the creative industry after graduation: Interview with Matt, our Digital Designer.
Getting your foot in the door after graduation is especially difficult in the creative industry. Find out how Matt, our youngest design superstar, tackled career development and moving to London. He also shares a few tips on finding inspiration, as well as his favourite Indian restaurant.
Matt specialises in digital experiences, with a focus on animated and interactive content. It was at Southampton University where Matt developed his skills in interface design, whilst specialising in motion graphics. If he isn’t sitting at his computer, you’ll most likely find him either playing footie or watching his beloved Chelsea.
Why web design?
My background is in motion design so I’ve always been interested in the way animation can tell a story more than a still image can. This can also be said for web design, now with the introduction of new technologies the possibilities are endless. With an increase in digitalisation, web design has become one of the most promising career choices and in this day and age, having a website is a must. For me, it wasn’t so much a jump straight into web design but more of a natural transition into digital interface design.
Is it difficult to find a job as a designer straight after graduation?
Yeah, I think breaking into the creative industry is always difficult straight after graduating, with an increase in popularity in this field there is way more competition than ever before. That being said, my final year at Southampton University set me up very well for the “real world”. We regularly attended talks from both established freelancers and designers working at well-known agencies, who gave valuable insight on the approach to take when applying for a creative job, and how to find a role that suits you and one that’ll be happy in.
Why did you choose to work at KOTA?
Firstly, the quality of work produced by KOTA enticed me to reach out and get in contact. I was interested in learning more about the web and KOTA seemed a fantastic place to do that. Secondly, from the moment I met with Jonny, James and Ed I knew KOTA was somewhere I could see myself working – I could already sense the friendly and close-knit work atmosphere that makes KOTA special. The flexibility offered here was also very appealing, on Wednesdays we all work remotely allowing for a less disrupted day.
Where do you get ideas for projects?
There are various resources both online and offline that I regularly read and try to keep up-to-date with. Medium and Smashing Magazine are platforms that post useful creative related articles and tips, an easy time killer on the train. For more visual inspiration, I frequently browse sites such as Awwwards, Siteinspire and UI movement, all of which collate the latest web and motion design – which for me is the best way to keep up with the latest trends. There are various books that I’ve recently been reading that I’d recommend, in particular, Lawrence Kings book called “Symbol*”, where he gives an insight into abstract and figurative trademarks.
If you were to pick your 3 favourite things about London, what would these be?
There are various aspects of London that make it a fantastic place to work and live. In particular, the diversity of the people here that you can meet, everyone seems to be on their own interesting career path. There are also so many opportunities in London that you wouldn’t get elsewhere, with something to do wherever you look. I am a big fan of my music and here there’s always an event or festival to attend. Another thing I love about London is the immense food selection it has to offer, if you are a fan of home-style Indian food, be sure to check out Gunpowder in Spitalfields.
