Social media update: Instagram’s grid, TikTok drama, and ‘The Xodus’

January 22nd 2025

By Emily

It’s been a bit of a wild week in the world of social media, hasn’t it? Instagram’s gone rogue with a grid update, TikTok vanished and reappeared, and X (formerly Twitter) is shedding users faster than Musk can tweet something divisive.

Social media will always be unpredictable—it’s half the fun (and half the headache). But let’s break down the chaos of this week and what it means for anyone trying to keep up.

Instagram’s grid: If it ain’t broke, break it?

If, like us, your graphic designers poured their souls into crafting those flawless square Instagram grids, we’ve got some HIGHLY irritating news for you. The app has switched its iconic 1:1 grid to a 4:5 aspect ratio, and let’s just say the internet isn’t impressed.

The update has left users fuming as their meticulously crafted feeds have been turned into what some are calling “the ugliest update ever.” (Thanks, Metro, for capturing the mood.) For creators, brands, and anyone who’s spent hours agonising over grid aesthetics, we’re now dealing with messy crops to try and get everything lined up again.

Instagram says the change is to align with how content appears in posts, but it feels like a classic case of fixing something that wasn’t broken (or, we suspect, even more of an attempt to become like TikTok…)

TikTok: Banned, then back

TikTok gave US users a mini heart attack this weekend when it went dark after being temporarily banned. The reason? Ongoing security concerns over its ties to China. Cue a public outcry, political drama, and—surprise—it was reinstated within 12 hours.

While TikTok’s fans were relieved, the incident highlights the app’s shaky position in the US. According to The Guardian, TikTok’s future still hangs in the balance, and it’s a timely reminder for brands relying heavily on the platform: have a Plan B (or C) in your pocket. This could’ve easily gone the other way, and you don’t want to be caught scrambling if it does next time.

Twitter/X: The Xodus

Looks like Elon Musk’s version of Twitter—X—is driving users away. Moral concerns over Musk’s leadership, controversial policies, and the general vibe shift have pushed users toward platforms like Bluesky and Mastodon. It’s lost 2.7 million active US users in two months, while Bluesky has gained 2.5 million.

For brands, this exodus is both a challenge and an opportunity. It’s a sign to diversify, sure, but also a chance to explore platforms that might better align with your values (and your audience’s). Don’t be the last one clinging to a sinking ship steered by… well… this guy.

Speaking of, follow us on Bluesky!

What this means for brands

This week’s social media drama is a bit of a wake-up call: no platform is invincible, no format is sacred, and nothing stays the same for long. If you’re trying to navigate the chaos, here’s how to stay ahead:

  1. Flex your social strategy: Adaptability isn’t optional. Your content should be ready to roll with the punches, whether that’s a grid shake-up or a platform blackout.
  2. Spread the risk: Be on multiple platforms. If one goes rogue, you’ve got backups.
  3. Keep it human: Trends come and go, but authenticity? That sticks. Whether you’re exploring TikTok clones or Bluesky’s ethical appeal, stay true to your brand.

So, how are these changes shaping your social media plans? Let’s hear it—comment, DM, or tag us (wherever you’re still hanging out):
