Writing a website brief: 7 big questions you should ask yourself

Introduction

Would you like to have your website redesigned or are you looking to refresh your brand? Well, you couldn’t find a better place, and our portfolio shows it best. KOTA is a progressive and insightful design agency focused on creating impactful, engaging brands and immersive digital experiences.

But first things first – every project needs a brief. And while we do help our clients define their goals and strategy during our discovery process, there are certain things you might want to consider while planning your new project.

7 big questions you should ask yourself when planning a new website

1. You and your business – what are your core values and what makes you different?
What is your USP? What makes you different from your competitors? Why would someone purchase your products over theirs?

2. Your brand – what is it and how do you communicate it?
Do you have an existing brand or is this something we would need to create? Do you have brand guidelines you can share with us or do you have a preference on how the site should feel aesthetically? What are your brand values?

3. Your customers – who are they and how do you reach them?
Who is your target market? Are you primarily B2B or B2C? Within this, who are your key user/buyer personas? Are you reaching the right audience or would you like to get to someone new? What problems do your customers face and how do you solve them?

4. Your competitors – where are they and what makes you better?
Who are your main competitors? What do you like about what they do? What do you not like? This might be competitors you compete with now, and those you plan to start competing with.

5. Your project – why does it need to happen?
Are you starting something new or planning to refresh the current website? How old is it? What works? What doesn’t?

6. Your goals and objectives – where do you want to get?
What are you looking to achieve from this project? What metrics will determine the success of this project? What KPIs would you like to measure? E.g. more sales qualified leads through the site, higher time on site, lower bounce rate etc.

7. Your plan – when and how do you want to get there?
Who are the main project stakeholders? Do you have a timeline or a specific deadline you would like to reach? What is the budget allocated for the project?
